In 2011, the citizens of Hinds County overwhelming elected Tyrone Lewis as the First African American Sheriff of Hinds County. While Sheriff of Hinds County, Tyrone L. Lewis managed a $10million budget in addition to overseeing operations from Public Safety, Detention Center, Emergency Management, Penal Farm and Constables. Because of Tyrone’s eagerness to transform flawed systems and erect systems that would reframe the Sheriff’s Department’s overall operations, Tyrone seized more cash, guns, cars, and drugs during his tenure as Sheriff of Hinds County than any other elected official who preceded him. As Sheriff, he unified neighborhoods by adopting neighborhood watch programs and empowering residents.
